-Facilities・Hot Springs-
Orihashi Ryokan has been in operation for over 140 years since its founding. In 1879, Kikuta Gosuke, a physician of traditional Chinese medicine for the Shimazu family, acquired land in this area. Gosuke’s eldest son, Kikuta Goro, developed the facilities by installing self-catering equipment, enabling the establishment to flourish and accommodate numerous visitors seeking therapeutic hot spring treatments. As Gorō was also a surgeon, he recognized the therapeutic benefits of the iron-rich waters for surgical treatments. He promoted Orihashi Onsen as the “Wound-Healing Hot Spring,” widely publicizing its existence and efficacy. Myōken began developing as a hot spring resort, and the Kikuta family’s approach earned the inn a reputation as a high-class establishment. Throughout the Taisho and early Showa periods, it became beloved as Kagoshima’s “inner sanctum,” attracting the upper classes and prominent figures of the day. The former inn, built in 1913, is now used as a private dining room.
