A brief guide to hot springs, dining, and travel directions.
Nanjoen opened in 1964, coinciding with the opening of the Yamanami Highway, on a hilltop overlooking the heart of Kurokawa Onsen. Nanjoen features 12 guest rooms with excellent views across the first to fourth floors. Each tatami-floored room includes a spacious veranda with a private counter made from a single slab of wood, allowing guests to enjoy the scenery of Kurokawa Onsen. All shoji screens are traditional “Yukimi-shoji” (snow-viewing screens), ensuring panoramic views from every window.
Enjoy the open-air bath “Hoshi-no-Yu” and the semi-open-air bath “Tsuki-no-Yu,” alternating daily for men and women, plus an indoor bath exclusively for lodging guests.
A distinctive staircase-like bath design with three stacked tubs to maximize mountain views. The water temperature increases as you climb, letting you warm up gradually.
Tip: The changing room for the open-air baths features a “hot spring facial steamer,” so you can enjoy the hot springs in various ways.
Our kaiseki cuisine features abundant mountain delicacies, focusing on seasonal local ingredients from Aso and beyond. Kumamoto and Aso are treasure troves of ingredients. To highlight these, we prepare dashi stock with care, creating nostalgic Japanese flavors.
