The Origin of Kyoto’s “Ryokan Motonako”… ‘Motonako’ is a word taken from the Manyoshu, meaning “ancient capital.”
It is said that long ago, it was the name of a social gathering place where noble people would assemble and relax. Theories include its origin from the archaic word “motona” meaning ‘aimlessly’ or “indiscriminately,” or that the history of ancient dreams and romance soothes the hearts of visitors… The name “Ryokan Motonako,” displayed as the establishment’s signboard, carries these many meanings. With 11 rooms, we provide attentive hospitality to each and every guest. The “Nene no Michi” path connecting Kodaiji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera Temple lies right before us.

The “Michelin Kyoto Osaka 2010” guide was first published for the city of Kyoto in 2010. For the first time, the guide featured a category for traditional Japanese inns. Ryokan Motonako was selected as one of only 22 inns listed and has received the symbol mark representing inn comfort for ten consecutive years. We are honored that Kyoto’s hospitality has been recognized and, as one of Kyoto’s inns, we express our gratitude to all our guests.
