A brief guide to hot springs, dining, and travel directions.
Amagase Onsen is a historic hot spring discovered 1,300 years ago, mentioned in the Fudoki of Bungo Province from the Nara period, and counted among the Three Great Hot Springs of Bungo alongside Beppu and Yufuin. Located on both banks of the Kusu River, Amagase boasts such an abundant supply of hot spring water that the baths constantly overflow without any recirculation. Ukiha Annex Shin-Shiyo sits on a hilltop with a panoramic view of Amagase, beloved by guests as the “Hydrangea Inn.”
The facility owns five natural springs on the premises. The sodium chloride-bicarbonate water, said to be effective for neuralgia and diabetes, fills the baths with constantly flowing fresh hot spring water.
Situated on the highest hill in the hot spring district, offering a breathtaking panoramic view. In June, stroll along the hydrangea-lined corridor while listening to the murmur of streams and songs of wild birds.
The clear waters of the Kusu River are home to a variety of freshwater fish, while the surrounding mountains yield an abundance of wild mountain vegetables—making Amagase a treasure trove of natural, locally sourced ingredients. Seasonal dishes and flavors are prepared to satisfy every guest.
