A brief guide to hot springs, dining, and travel directions.
Boasting a 400-year tradition, Takeo Onsen’s Toyokan began as the travelers’ inn “Shokokuya” during the Keichō era and served as a secondary post station for the sankin-kōtai system during the Tokugawa period. In 1896, following the opening of the local railway line, the inn was reorganized and renamed “Toyo-kan” in anticipation of increased travel between the East and the West. It is also a historic inn where the sword master Miyamoto Musashi refined the philosophy of “The Book of Five Rings” following the Shimabara Rebellion. With the hospitality and trust cultivated since its founding, Toyokan provides all guests with a relaxing and memorable stay.
The spring water flows directly from the ground on the premises at 46°C, adjusted to the perfect bathing temperature without adding water or heating—a true source-fed experience.
